Exciting neighbours

  • 12th Dec, 2003 at 7:06 AM

I should stop complaining that I don't have exciting neighbours.

At 5:30 this morning, I'm awakened by a series of knocks. I get up, and realise that someone is knocking on a door down the hall. I'm about to go out and ask the drunk man to leave when I hear "Police. Please open the door sir. If you do not open the door, we will be forced to get a warrant."

I wisely decide to stay in my room. After some insistent knocking, the door is opened and they are allowed within.

At 7:00, I hear a big bang. This is the sound of a door slamming. Then I hear some broken English consisting of a foreign man swearing that he won't let social services take away his daughter. I hear some little girl howling in the background and some more slamming.

Lots of slamming. Then someone fumbling with a lock. The girl is still crying. I think I hear some police radio action before the policemen leave.

This is a horrible way to start one's day. I have now decided that if the police ever come early in the morning, I will insist politely that they return at a civilised hour.

Alas, I shouldn't go back to sleep. Maybe I can get some dishes done.
