On batched LiveJournal posting

  • 8th Jan, 2005 at 1:04 PM

Isn't it odd how LiveJournal doesn't work very well in batched mode? I mean, here I am writing diary entries once a day, and posting them to my journal. But I only get an Internet connexion (to which I can hook up my laptop) about once a week. So I never get to read my friends' entries, and people leave sparse comments in mine.

Weblogging just wouldn't work without always-on widespread Internet service. It's really weird living without it, because I feel oddly disconnected from the network of people that I want to remember. And yet, before I began weblogging, I did perfectly fine just corresponding via e-mail. Is this because I've become more sociable? Because I've become a compulsive consumer from the information feed? Or because I'm lonely, because I'm so far from everyone I used to know?

I find travelling is really lonely. When I was in Spain, I bought some english language books to read, because they reminded me of home.

Depends on how I travel, I find. For example, youth hostels with shared bedrooms and common areas, I find very interesting, I've met many people and never felt alone, there was always companionship to be found (in larger cities, even at weird times during the night!). When I do the more normal hotel thing (usually on work travel), I find myself very lonely, in this strange land where there is nothing to relate to.

I think I like it best when I travel with best friends. I have such trouble talking to strangers that I find it helpful to be a wingman, who interjects useful comments where appropriate.

So I feel quite scared and isolated being the object of attention for so many people.

And at night when I'm alone with my thoughts, even though I'm surrounded by family, I still miss Julie very much.

LJ has rather poor notifications for your friends list. If you go away on vacation, or travel, or whatever, it'd be nice if you could set it to send you an email when a friends posts something, so you could check it in batch and not lose anything. Or some variation thereof.

I don't think 'batched mode' is a problem. LJ doesn't work in a 'non periodic' mode, I would say. You have to check it at an interval whose length is inversely proportional to the length of your friends list, because otherwise you miss too much information, and their comments on your comments, etc.

I know exactly what you speak of; every time I travel, I just tend to ignore LJ for a long time, because checking it at long intervals is arguably harder than just ignoring it. (See my month-long absences, etc.)

I don't have a solution to this problem. Drink heavily, maybe?

I seem to have caught up, due to my recent bedrest and wonderful wireless Internet service.

But you're right. This "drinking from the pipeline" really does require copious free time.
