Technogym

  • 22nd Feb, 2005 at 12:47 AM

Today has been a very tiring day. I even took a luxurious two hour nap in the afternoon, but that only made me sentient, as opposed to intelligent.

I did, however, survive until 20:00, which is when I headed out of the office into the cold and sleet-slick streets. I had an appointment at the Y.M.C.A. to see a fitness instructor.

I quickly changed into my gym clothes, made sure I had my membership card and my newly purchased elastic strap. Then I headed up to the second-floor weight room. It's not very large, and at 21:00 it was nearly empty. There are shiny pieces of equipment, all covered in electronics, with the word Technogym written all over them. This is the high-tech way to exercise.

For me, it's all about pushing buttons. Yay buttons!

I introduced myself to Krista, who will have designed my workout. She is a petite blond with freckles on her arms. She wore a regulation red instructor's T-shirt. She is also patient and kind and understanding, which is important since I had no idea how to use any of the exercise equipment at all.

I filled out a questionnaire about my health problems and then we sat down to figure out what I want to do. She thought a while and then wrote down some jargon on a chart of paper. We then went to the eight machines in turn and figured out what the right settings and weights are for my meek build. She entered this into her computer terminal and we were done. Now all I have to do is walk around with a heart-rate monitor and a flash disk. These bring my settings along to each machine and I don't have to remember anything. It's rather convenient and novel.

So I've had two workouts today. One at 9am with my gym buddy, and one at 9pm with my fitness instructor. I took advantage of my premium membership to sit in the scalding steam room until I broke out into a marvellous sweat. Now my arms ache blissfully and I crave protein. I had a Santangelo's sandwich for lunch, and on returning home I had bacon and eggs for dinner. Both were incredibly delicious.

You're making me want to go to the gym. This has never happened before...

I have guest passes at the Y.M.C.A. You can come to the gym with me to try out the whole experience. And we can chat as we exercise; it's far less boring that way.

Steamrooms
Nice to see that you've finally met a steam room that's worthwhile. The one at Les Suites was pathetic.
