As I Like It

  • 18th Apr, 2005 at 6:41 PM

I have to admit that I hate talking to people. Not because I hate people, no no no no no. I love people. I think humanity is precious and beautiful and wonderful, even if it consists mostly of the unwashed masses. No, I hate talking to people because I am incredibly introverted.

I have to admit that I hate talking to people even more, when I do it through a telephone. Not only does my introversion work against me here, but talking to people over the telephone usually means that I'm dealing with something unpleasant. And so this association strikes a Pavlovian chord within me, and I have to do all that I can to stop myself from slamming down the receiver and curling up in the fœtal position.

Because I am moving, I am forced to deal with people. I know they probably don't like speaking to irate customers, so I try to be as pleasant as possible, despite the building panic that works its way up my throat. I have just gotten off the phone with Bell Canada, Bell Sympatico, Hydro Québec, and Gaz Métro. Then, just for good measure, I had to call Les Suites Ottawa to book a hotel room.

By the time I was done, I was a quivering mess. But I'm pretty sure that I have everything arranged. In a perfect world, this would go off smoothly and I wouldn't notice any inconveniences. However, that would be shocking and surprising. This means that on 30 April, I shall be sans phone, sans Internet, sans power, sans gas, sans everything.

Meh, tiling one window is such an intractable problem, I gave up long ago. Sometimes, I have two, so when I look for something, I go "oh, must be on the other one" and hit Alt-Tab. ;-)

I so have them antialiased fonts! Except in my xterms, but my font is so large that it doesn't do anything. :-)

And NeXTStep is the innovation from 15 years ago, instead of the innovation from 30 years ago, obviously the wave of the future! Just ask Apple!
