Last night, I started hacking on the typesetting for the Desktop Developers' Conference talk that Pat and I are going to be presenting.

For a very long time, I thought that the proceedings for events like Linux Symposium were really ugly because people didn't know how to typeset things in LATEX. Actually, no. It's because the typesetting is done that way on purpose.

I've been wrestling the style a bit to get the minimum number of changes that will make our paper look decent. I've tightened up some of the excessively large whitespace between paragraphs and changed the fixed-width font to LModern Typewriter.

Now all I have to do is finish writing the paper and drawing a couple of diagrams. Hmm, I think I will do some back of an envelope drawings, and then trace them into PostScript. Does anyone know of an easy way to do this?

Do your diagrams in Inkscape and export to eps.

I have become proficient with xfig, but I find its verb-noun interface completely infuriating. I no longer use it by choice.

I haven't had problems with dia.

Dia works great.

I no longer use xfig now that I have OmniGraffle. It's amazing.

Dude, you are rapidly becoming a Mac OS fan. It's a disturbing trend.

You know I can't run OmniGraffle.

I've been a Mac OS (X) fan for a long time man.

Sure you can run OmniGraffle. All you need is $500 to buy yourself a Mac Mini ;).

MacMini is CDN$629 + taxes. Then you need to buy the required paraphanelia, including 1GB or RAM, a USB keyboard/mouse or a KVM compatible with (not easy to find at a decent price), etc.

And OmniGraffle is not free, neither like beer, nor like speech, which is something to add to the cost.

I cannot believe you bothered to write that response to my tongue-in-cheek comment.

Why do you say the typesetting is ugly on purpose? I'm curious.

It's on purpose because the class tells it to be ugly. So whoever implemented the class wanted it this way. I've had to override certain definitions so things would turn out nicely.

Oh, that doesn't require *intention*. Mere stupidity and incompetance will suffice.

ghawd, we have to write a paper ?
9th Jul, 2005 21:40 (UTC)
Yes, I believe we do.

Not only that, we are also late.

cause I didn't find anything about that given that
