Friday best

  • 9th Jan, 2006 at 1:46 AM

My whirlwind lifestyle of parties and decadence continues into the new year. On Friday night, I had eveglass and friends over for dinner. I hadn't done a proper feast in a while and I was away for the holidays, so my larder was quite bare. So right after work, I strode off briskly to go grocery shopping.

I took advantage of my newfound knowledge and went from store to store picking up food. Radicchio from here, bread from there, beef from the butcher, shrimp from the fishmonger: I was well laden with food by the time I got home. I started unloading the shopping bags into the fridge when the buzzer rang.

I pushed the button and let eveglass and Sam upstairs. They took off their shoes and I offered them seats. But Julie was too eager to help, so I had to set her about doing things like peeling mandarins and setting the table. Actually, I was quite glad for the assistance, since the cooking started an hour later than it should have.

Dinner was a simple, four-course affair. We started off with a shrimp and clam bisque that was uncooperative to make, but still turned out rather well. Then it was followed by a spinach salad with mandarins and guinea-fowl confit. iangurudata made his entrance just as we were cutting into spencer steaks with roasted onions, new potatoes, and maple-glazed carrots. And we all finished together with a simple crème brulée.

In a very satisfying way, this meal was luxuriously slow. By the time we were done, we had eaten and chatted for three hours. Sadly, this did not leave much time for after-dinner games.

Perhaps next time?

You need another button that you could push to open a trap in the floor.

Or maybe you need a button in the entrance that electrocutes whoever is in your guest bed, I'm not sure.
