Debian relevant entry (!)

Today I spent a whole lot of time hacking on Debian, which is something I haven't done in a while. I feel sort of guilty for putting it off for this long, but hey, better late than never.

After sufficient poking and prodding, I finally got tvtime packaged up and uploaded into the Debian archive. I hear the 0.9.15 release is really good, but as I have no working TV tuner, I'm going to have to rely on hearsay. Still, people seem to really like tvtime, and I think it's because Billy Biggs put a lot of time and effort into getting the details just right.

I had paid a lot of attention on getting XPLC and WvStreams packaged last month. But I never got around to uploading them to the archive. I've got XPLC sent off, and we have to wait for it to get approved before the new WvStreams will get in. In the time between October and November, there have been enough changes to motivate a new upstream release. Actually, what's cool is that WvStreams is being used by CS246 students to write a MUSH. Which is one class of application that WvStreams excels at producing. I sure hope that the students have a positive experience with the library. Too bad there hasn't been much high-level feedback on the course newsgroup.

Just wait until after we hand in our final MUSH product ... I know I'm going to reserve potential gushing until then.

I don't know that the 246 students will really get a proper feel for WvStreams.

Think about it... this is phase two of their project, and it's already full of STL data structures which they're familiar with. They're clearly not going to want to rewrite their code to use the WvStreams equivalents, and any new code they generate will likely use the mechanisms they're already familiar with (read: STL).

As far as I can guess, the 246 students will take the sample code that is given on the course website on how to make a basic server, use it (some of them might even read it and kind of look how it works), and get their project done.

Perhaps a *few* will actually look into WvStreams, but for the most part I'd be willing to wager that it will be used in a very limited way based only on small modifications to the provided source.

Care to offer a differing opinion?

No differing opinion at all.

I'm going to make a concerted effort to make WvStreams more STL-friendly.

I can think that in most instances, implementing STL wrappers around WvStreams shouldn't be too difficult.
