This particular New Year's Eve was the second worst one that I've experienced in recent memory. After dinner, we left an uncle's (very nice) apartment and headed downtown to ring in the New Year.

Instead of a wonderful celebration, we were greeted with a great long lineup. We were filed, like cattle, down various twisting streets for a good hour or so. Then we were packed into a very small intersection, with about 250,000 other people, where we stood for another hour. Then at midnight, some people blew whistles and let go of helium balloons.

Apparently, there was a better celebration over at Times Square, which involved some sort of countdown. But we never got to see it at all. And I was most uncomfortable being squished amongst so many people. Just thinking about it gives me an upset stomach.
