A CSC Fogey

  • 11th Feb, 2005 at 10:38 AM

When I joined the Computer Science Club back in late 2000 (or was it early 2001), one of the things I helped with was the bloodless coup that kicked all the old CSC fogeys out. These were mostly vagrants that didn't even take computer science, much less anything tangentally related to math at all. Half of them had graduated and were just homeless, housing their bodies in the office to while about their days.

They were loud, abrasive, and smelly. And they had to go.

For years, we kept up the campaign against having graduated students hang out in the CSC. So on Wednesday, when I sat in the office and hacked about on carbonated-water, I realised that I was actually a fogey!

Without being loud, abrasive, or smelly. Other saving graces of mine are the fact that I still know people there, and that I am gainfully employed 700 km away, so I'm entitled to visit while there are still people I know. But these are just excuses, I know.

Ha! God, that's got to smart a little.

You'll know you have a problem if you start coming to Waterloo *just* to hang out in the CSC.

I was wondering what happened to all of them. And no, you've got a long way from being a fogey. Those people had long been at the CSC before I started!
